Neo-Classicism vs Modernism

Visiting Berlin's city centre is to venture into ancient Athens. Berliner Dom (Cathedral), the final resting place of Wilhelm I was completed in 1905. Further down the Spree is the mini-Acropolis of Museum Island featuring the Bode, Pergamon, Altes & Neues Museums all built between 1830 (Altes) & 1930 (Pergamon). The Prussian love of neoclassical style means these buildings heave with doric, ionic and corinthians columns. Am awed by your retro style architect Herr Friedrich Schinkel; as was Albert Speers.

Further up river from this uber architecture are some Modernist masterpieces. We stumbled upon  Shell House (1932 by Emil Fahrenkamp) designed in the New Objectivity style. Then onto the Bauhaus Archiv. Walter Gropius designed this crisp, rhythmic museum in 1964. It's a shame the permanent display can't make use of the natural light vents. And lastly, Mies. The whole Steudle clan are blown away by the  floating beauty of the Neues Nationalgalerie, the only postwar building that van der Rohe was able to complete in 1968 in Germany. We loved the external plaza and courtyard garden. If this was the "nanny-state' we'd be guard-railed against this four meter drop. Sneaky Pete shot of roll of film (so to speak) of Mies pivot doors and joinery; still perfectly honed and current design.

The Steudle Clan - Berkheim

Here we are on our first day in Berkheim fresh off our flight all 30 hours of travel and welcome by our aunts and uncles and a spread of pretzels and small goods.

Willi Umbeer, Hugo & Otto Steudle, Gretel Umbeer standing, Irene & Hans Steudle all feasting on the Umbeer terrace.

Huber Schreinerei (joinery/furniture) in Esslingen where Siggy did his training in the 1950s.

The extreme hill that terrified Pete as a youngster. It was conquered back in 1971 but is still scary.

Same hill tempted the younger Steudle's.

Volksfest

The 168th Cannstatter Volksfest, Stuttgart is combination beer festival, autumn harvest festival and carnival; the second biggest fest in Germany after Munchen.

Historically, a festival to encourage and reward farmers and their agricultural produce, it is now a eatin'n'drinkin'fest. A very amusing time spent dirndl & lederhosen watching and the beer halls were a riot.

Sadly, no produce or animals to view, makes us quite fond of our Royal Melbourne Show.
However, boys rate the carnival as "the best ever!"

Give us this day our daily bread

The Swaebish Brezel 1200s-now.

Oh your salt crusted belly, your crunchy knotted arms...

Our trip to Germany: the difference in scale

The view from our loft room in Esslingen, thanks to Frank & Airbnb looking towards the Burg and vineyards covering the hill. In Australia one or two vapor trails is a beautiful site, on arrival here the sky is full of calligraphic lines.

30 hours of travel, door to door, North Melbourne to Germany. We are greeted by our  aunts & uncles Gretel & Willi, Irene & Hans, and of course, traditional Swarbisch fare.  Huge bretzels, so doughy on the curve and cruchy through the knot and said to made to view the sky "three times".

The fachwerk house with our loft rooms nestled into the roof line.

Skating unter der brucke on the Neckar River. An 'awesome' skate park for its size, variety of ramps, grinds, bowls & plaza area.

Soft eyes?

The Wire: Refugees Episode #4.4 (2006)
Det. William 'Bunk' Moreland:  If you got soft eyes, you can see the whole thing. If you got hard eyes - you staring at the same tree missing the forest.
Det. Shakima 'Kima' Greggs: Ah, zen shit.
'Bunk': Soft eyes, grasshopper.

This is a blog about seeing and recording, the things I won't entrust to memory...
